Keeping things simple while learning a new software program is good thinking. He is an appealing blue bean with a smile somewhat like one sported by Ewen McGregor or Robbie Williams.
This is a good Character Design! I agree with Frank, it's very smart to keep the design simple and I bet you'll be laughing when everyone is modelling the characters as you have a very simple shape to model...however the curve of the character could still prove to be a bit complicated to shape...try using two spheres and model them, instead of just one and then just shape them and combine them etc. I like the actual character though, it's simple however it's still very appealing and solid, and it's very likeable, also the blue colour is very appealing and stands out etc. I love the characters facial expressions, the cheesy smile and the semi arrogant face is awesome! I agree with Frank also, it reminds me a bit of these other celebrities smiles...even myself after a few drinks at the bar with fellow students ha!:)
